Elle Decoration asked Platform to respond to a challenging brief to create a  luxurious master bedroom in a cramped attic space.

Platforms answer was to replace solid walls with translucent and reflective materials. Reflective planes add depth to a space, while glowing back-illuminated surfaces deliver diffused light. Both these measures increase the impression of a room’s size through reflectivity and translucency.

A light colour scheme acts as a neutral palette to the gold shimmering accents. Using light colours helps to reflect light and make a room feel larger. The end wall over the bed is clad with a black mirror intersected with LED lightstrips. The reflective nature of the glass roof creates the impression of vertical walls rising through the space, negating the pitch of the ceiling and providing the the effect of a much larger, taller space. Mirrors accentuate the size of the bedroom, making it feel wider and creating a continuum of space.

The two loungers from each side of the room come together at night to form one oversized bed. During the day both loungers move partially into the wall recess, to create a walkway through the space, taking full advantage of the only clear head-height in the room. The hand woven leather panel on the end wall becomes the headboard for the bed.

Discreet linear storage hubs integrated into each lounger become apparent at night, storing the essentials from AV equipment to make-up. The end sections are fixed on both sides and are used as reading lights or as additional ambient lighting.
